You've seen the numbers. 200. 400. 800. 1,000. But when it comes to choosing bedding that feels genuinely good against your skin, thread count tells only part of the story.
So, what is thread count?
Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric — both horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp). In theory, more threads means a denser, softer weave. In practice, it's not that simple.
Why higher isn't always better
This is where the industry gets noisy.
Some brands inflate thread count by twisting multiple thinner threads together and counting each one separately. A fabric labelled "1,000 thread count" can end up feeling heavier, stiffer, and less breathable than one at 300 — because the number has been engineered, not earned.
A genuinely high thread count only matters when the raw fibre is good to begin with. Without quality cotton, a big number on the label is just marketing.
The ranges worth knowing
- 200–300 TC — Crisp, cool, breathable. Works beautifully in percale weaves. Ideal if you sleep warm.
- 300–500 TC — The sweet spot for sateen. Smooth, with a subtle lustre and soft drape. Dense enough to feel luxurious, light enough to breathe.
- 600+ TC — Can feel wonderful in the right fabric, but diminishing returns set in quickly. Beyond 800, be sceptical.
What matters more than the number
Fibre quality. Long-staple and extra-long-staple cotton (like Egyptian or Supima) produce smoother, stronger threads — which means softer fabric that lasts longer, wash after wash.
Weave type. Percale gives you that cool, matte, hotel-crisp finish. Sateen offers warmth, sheen, and a buttery hand-feel. Neither is better — it depends on how you sleep.
Finish. How the fabric is processed after weaving affects everything. A well-finished 300 TC cotton will outperform a poorly finished 600 TC every time.
The REMsleep approach
We chose sateen for a reason. It's the weave that best delivers what we care about — softness without weight, warmth without stuffiness, and a quiet lustre that looks as good as it feels.
Our focus was never on inflating a number. It was on finding the right balance of fibre, weave, and finish — so the bedding feels considered from the moment you pull it from the packaging.
Because the goal was never the highest thread count. It was the best night's sleep.
